MAMA
Saw MAMA last night. Yet another jump scare ghost witch movie with creepy kids. Hollywood phones in yet another box of ok. It wasn't all bad though. Jessica Chastain's character is rather refreshing as the punk rocker protagonist who is smarter than the average "white woman in peril." It was actually the first time I've ever shouted to the screen, "DON'T DO THAT" and the person actually listened. The main failure in this movie comes from believe it or not, showing too much. The shadowy cg ghost that typically would do nothing but lurk and moan in a movie like this has a whole personality with a sympathetic backstory and even a few speaking lines! While an interesting turn, it ultimately stops you from getting scared the longer it goes on. I want to give it a higher rating because of Chastain's semi-intelligent performance and its half thought to give the ghost more character but ultimately it's just not enough to rise above the fray and gets a 3...out of 5.
