AMERICAN HUSTLE

I saw AMERICAN HUSTLE last night! This is a David O. Russell movie all about a pair of small time con artists, played by Christian Bale and Amy Adams, who get blackmailed by an overzealous young FBI agent, played by Bradly Cooper, into building an elaborate sting operation designed to take down the most powerful figures in 1970s New Jersey including Mayors, Mafioso and power brokers. This movie has a star studded cast, powerful performances, surprisingly good cameo spots, some truly great dialogue, costumes and set design that will no doubt be nominated for at least a couple big time awards this year. The only fault I can name is the story is kinda weak. Normally that wouldn't be such a big deal but in this movie the weakness of the story makes it sit like Charlie Brown's Christmas ornaments on a flimsy tree. Then there's the issue of tone, I feel like the director didn't do as good of job as he needed to with his actors to convey the spirit of his film accurately. There are many scenes that are supposed to be come off as funny but for one reason or another the spirit of the scene is lost in translation and they're played too seriously. Overall I'd say that American Hustle is a good film to see if you like good performances and especially if you're a fan of Jennifer Lawrence, who is fist clenchingly hilarious and Christian Bale who's character is about as far from American Psycho as you can get! Its got to be seen to be believed. American Hustle gets a 4...out of 5.
