KICK-ASS 2
I happened to watch KICK-ASS 2 the other day! Now, in most cases when the word sequel is uttered in reference to a popular film, rarely do we see something like a Godfather 2 or an Empire Strikes Back. More often than not, we usually end up getting a contrived, derivative, sub-par version of a film like The Hangover 2 or Ghostbusters 2. I am glad to say that this is not the case for Kick-ass 2 as this particular sequel ends up being just as good as the original. What made Kick-Ass the film it was was its ability to be very playful and silly while at the same time being wildly inappropriate and surprisingly violent and real. The makers of Kick-Ass 2 remembered that too and really did a good job of not just recreating that magic but also taking it to the next level. The movie centers around our two heroes from the previous film Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chloƫ Grace Moretz respectively, and their new lives as ex-superheroes dealing with normal things like school, homework, social order, that little twinge in the back of their minds that wants to slip into tights, oh yeah and vengeful Red Mist, played by Christopher Mintz-Plasse (AKA McLovin), who is now hell bent on retribution because of what Kick-Ass did to his dad in the first film. Pretty much everything in the film is great from stem to stern in this film. The story is interesting, the action is well filmed and stays true to the spirit of the original by being both zany and hyper violent and most importantly, the characters like Dr. Gravity and Col. Stars And Stripes, played by Donald Faison and Jim Carrey, are fall out hilarious. The movie is not perfect unfortunately, it seems like although there are a lot of great characters on screen, the film suffers because none of the characters gets enough time to tell as full of a story that I thought could have been told. That notwithstanding, it is still plenty of fun and a great film to cap off your summer vacation with. Kick-Ass 2 gets a 4...out of 5.
