A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES

I caught A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES the other day! This Scott Frank directed film is actually an adaptation of the 10th novel in a series written by Lawrence Block about private detective Matthew Scudder. This film tells the story of Detective Scudder, played here by Liam Neeson, and his search to find the party responsible for the murder of a drug kingpin's wife.

Aside from having a premise nearly identical to Taken, and nearly every other Liam Neeson movie since then for that matter, I enjoyed this movie. It's got a super dark and twisted noir-ish story and certain flair that really screams the 90's. While it might seem bad for any other movie, the 90's were a prime time for some really dark and gritty neo-noir crime films and TV shows like Payback and New York Undercover that we just don't see these days. The acting is also pretty good with David Harbour playing an especially creepy bad guy and X-Factor rapper Astro turning in a decent performance here too. On the downside, I 'm not sure that it was as good as it could have been. Although the book is set in 1999, a lot of things, writing wise, that were just fine at the time that the book was written(1992), seem a little out of date and border on tropeish today. That being said, it still has a lot to offer and the film's third act is especially gripping. Overall I'd say that if you liked movies like Devil in a Blue Dress or Se7en or 8MM, you'll like this too. A Walk Among the Tombstones gets a 3.5...out of 5.
